Ball’s Blue Collar Bull

In Assemblyman Greg Ball’s latest ad, he uses video from Assembly floor debate for campaigning purposes in possible violation of Assembly rules.  Just as galling, Assemblyman Ball calls himself a “blue collar guy” with bills to pay.  While it may be true that Greg Ball was the first person in his family to graduate from college, it is impossible to describe his life as Assemblymember as “blue collar”.  As a state legislator, Assemblyman Greg Ball earns a base salary of $79,500 for what is considered a part-time job.  On top of that, Assemblyman Ball earns an additional $9,000 bonus for his position as the Ranking Minority Member of the Assembly Veterans Affairs Committee, for a total income of $88,500 a year for approximately six months of work.  For some perspective, the median income in New York State is $55,980.  Self-described man of the people Greg Ball makes substantially more than a majority of New Yorkers for doing half the work.

So why the bogus bull collar shtick?   For the same reason that Ball, a two term Assemblyman, includes his first speech in a campaign ad: after spending years in Albany and taking home more than $250,000 in taxpayer money, Greg Ball has accomplished nothing for his constituents.  He has used his position to grandstand, to earn a comfortable (and decidedly not blue collar) living and run for his next office, whether it be congress (which did not turn out so well) or the state senate. If he moves to the upper chamber, you can be sure he will do the same.

Ball is trying to brand himself, but it’s falling flat. I would like to see a list of blue-collar jobs Greg Ball has had while an adult; it would be one short list, I bet.

Blue collar? He is wearing a blue Oxford shirt, for sure. But blue collar I doubt.
