Before electing Assemblyman Greg Ball to the New York State Senate, New Yorkers should consider some recent history and more closely consider current events. The New York State Senate Coup last summer demonstrated the power of one or two unprincipled senators in a closely divided body like the New York State Senate. We are now getting a re-fresher course in last summer’s lesson with the threat by Senators Pedro Espada and Ruben Diaz to shut down New York State by voting down an emergency budget extension bill. According to Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, if the budget extender is blocked, unemployment benefits will be halted and state programs frozen.
In all likelihood, the State Senate will remain closely divided even after the 2010 elections. Electing Greg Ball to the Senate risks throwing another mercenary character into this mix. Ball could easily serve as the new fourth amigo in the Gang of Four, replacing the disgraced Hiram Monserrate. It is an unholy alliance that would be completely natural. Despite their different political backgrounds, Pedro Espada and Greg Ball have much in common. Like Senator Espada, Assemblyman Ball is a creative self-financer. Like Espada, Ball also has interesting ideas about how to use funds from his government office. Finally, despite these aforementioned shenanigans, Albany insiders Espada and Ball have the gall to speak the language of reform.
As critical as the budget is, the next session of the senate, which will be responsible for redistricting, will have even more political goodies for freebooting senators to battle for. Already, Senator Espada is likely anticipating the arrival of the next amigo so that he and his reformed “bipartisan” gang of scoundrels can shake down the citizens of New York for even more.
